1. About SmartCAD AI

SmartCAD AI is a browser-based 2D drafting board built specifically for civil engineering work. It combines a full CAD drawing toolset with ready-made engineering drawing generators, structural and geotechnical analysis modules, and a set of AI-assisted drafting features — all running inside a single web page, with no installation required.

The application is reached directly through a web browser at the address below. No software installation, plug-in, or account sign-up is needed to start drafting.

1.1 What SmartCAD AI offers

       General drafting: lines, polylines, rectangles, circles, arcs, ellipses, polygons, splines, Bezier curves, text, arrows, points, dimensions, leaders, tables, construction lines and rays.

       Editing tools: move, copy, rotate, scale, mirror, offset, trim, extend, and delete, plus direct on-canvas grip-editing.

       NEW Advanced edit tools: stretch, fillet, chamfer, join, break, divide, explode, measure, align, match properties, path array, and rectangular/polar array — see Section 6.4.

       NEW Advanced selection: select similar objects, select by layer, select by colour, select inside a polygon, Quick Select and Filter Selection — see Section 7.

       NEW Parametric constraints: apply persistent geometric relations (horizontal, vertical, parallel, perpendicular, tangent, concentric, coincident, equal length/radius, fixed length/angle/radius) that are automatically re-enforced whenever geometry changes — see Section 8.

       Engineering drawing generators: ready-made tools for survey, structural, geotechnical and water-resource drawings (traverse plotting, footing/column/beam/slab layouts, reinforcement detailing, bar bending schedules, borehole logs, retaining walls, pipe networks, and more).

       Engineering analysis: a truss finite-element solver, a continuous-beam structural analysis tool, and a geotechnical bearing-capacity and settlement calculator.

       NEW Smart Templates: ready-made starting drawings for buildings, infrastructure, geotechnical structures, water & sanitation works, and planning layouts — see Section 13.

       AI features (Beta): draw-from-text-prompt generation, sketch-to-CAD conversion from an uploaded image (NEW), smart auto-dimensioning, auto annotations, drawing error detection and validation, engineering calculations, and material take-off estimation.

       Drafting aids: snap, object snap (OSnap), polar tracking, ortho mode, a configurable grid, and precise coordinate entry.

       Blocks and libraries: turn any selection into a reusable block, and insert saved blocks or engineering library symbols.

       Import: DXF files, DWG viewing, raster images, and PDF underlays for tracing.

       Export & output: PNG, SVG, PDF, DXF and JSON export, plus a dedicated Print/Plot dialog with paper size, scale, orientation and title-block options.

       Project management: New / Open / Save project files (JSON), full undo/redo history, layers with visibility and lock control, and an object Properties panel.

       Two themes: a dark drafting-table theme and a light theme, switchable at any time.

1.2 Who this manual is for

This manual is written for anyone using SmartCAD AI to produce drawings — civil engineering students, site engineers, surveyors, and drafters. It covers the interface layout, every toolbar and menu, the complete keyboard shortcut list, and step-by-step guidance for common tasks.

3. Interface Overview

The SmartCAD AI workspace is divided into five main zones. Every zone is always visible — nothing needs to be opened separately.

Zone

What it does

1. Top ribbon

Runs across the top of the window. Holds the brand mark, the tool finder search box, file operations, Import, the Engineering / Templates / Analysis / Select / AI menus, Undo/Redo, the parametric-constraint Solve button, drafting-aid toggles, coordinate entry, units, zoom controls, Export, Print, Shortcuts, Help and the theme switch. See Section 5.

2. Left tool rail

A narrow vertical strip with icon buttons for Select, Pan, every drawing tool, every basic editing tool, a second row of advanced edit tools (stretch, fillet, chamfer, join, break, divide, explode, measure, align, match properties, path array, array), Insert block, Engineering Libraries, and Make Block. See Section 6.

3. Drawing canvas

The main working area in the centre. Shows the grid, the object being drawn, a live hint box (bottom-left) describing what to do next, and a Command bar for typed commands.

4. Right panel

Two tabs — Properties (edit the style and geometry of whatever is selected, including parametric constraint controls) and Layers (show/hide, lock/unlock, recolour, or delete drawing layers). See Sections 8 and 10.

5. Status bar

A strip along the bottom showing the live cursor position, active tool, active layer, selection count, and — while drawing or editing — distance, bearing, slope and area readouts, plus the current grid spacing. See Section 11.

4. Getting Started

4.1 Opening the application

Open a web browser and go to cad.ervivekshah.com.np. The drafting board loads directly — there is nothing to install.

4.2 Starting, opening and saving a project

       New — starts a blank drawing. Found in the top ribbon, or press Ctrl+N.

       Open — loads a previously saved project file (.json). Top ribbon, or Ctrl+O.

       Save — saves the current drawing to a project file (.json) that can be re-opened later. Top ribbon, or Ctrl+S.

Project files only work inside SmartCAD AI. For drawings to share or plot, use Export or Print instead (Section 16).

4.3 Setting your drawing units

Choose the working unit from the Units drop-down in the top ribbon: millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres, inches, feet, yards or miles. All coordinate entry, dimensions and readouts follow this setting.

4.4 A basic drawing workflow

1. Pick a drawing tool from the left tool rail (or press its shortcut key).

2. Click points on the canvas to place the object, or type exact coordinates into the coordinate box (Section 9) and press Enter.

3. Use Snap, OSnap, Polar and Ortho to draw accurately (Section 9).

4. Select finished objects with the Select tool to move, copy, rotate, scale, mirror, offset, trim, extend, or use an advanced edit tool (Section 6.4) such as fillet, chamfer, stretch or array.

5. Apply parametric constraints (Section 8) where geometry should stay locked to a relation as the drawing changes.

6. Check and adjust object style and geometry in the Properties panel; organise the drawing using Layers.

7. Save the project regularly (Ctrl+S), and Export or Print when the drawing is ready to share (Section 16).

5. Top Ribbon Reference

The top ribbon is the main command bar. Its contents, left to right, are described below.

A search box (press / to focus it) — type any tool or command name and press Enter to run it directly, without hunting through menus.

File — New / Open / Save

Start a new drawing, open a saved project (.json), or save the current one.

Import

Bring in a DXF drawing, view a DWG file, or place a reference image or PDF underlay for tracing.

Engineering

Opens the Engineering drawing-generator menu — Survey, Structural Drawing, Geotechnical and Water Resources tools. See Section 12.

Templates

Opens the Smart Templates menu — ready-made starting drawings across Buildings, Infrastructure, Geotechnical, Water & Sanitation and Planning categories. See Section 13.

Analysis

Opens the Advanced Engineering Analysis menu — truss FEA, continuous-beam analysis, and bearing-capacity/settlement. See Section 14.

Select

Opens the Advanced Selection menu — Select Similar, Select by Layer, Select by Color, Select Inside Polygon, Quick Select and Filter Selection. See Section 7.

AI (Beta)

Opens the AI feature menu — Generate (including Sketch to CAD), Annotate, Review and Engineering AI tools. See Section 15.

Undo / Redo

Step the drawing history backward or forward.

Solve

Re-solves every parametric constraint in the drawing against the current geometry. Useful after a large edit, or to re-check the drawing is still fully constrained. See Section 8.

Snap / Grid size / Grid toggle

Turn point-snapping on or off, set the grid spacing, and show or hide the background grid.

OSnap / Polar / Ortho

Object Snap locks onto endpoints, midpoints and centres of existing objects. Polar Tracking snaps the drawing angle to fixed increments. Ortho constrains new points to strictly horizontal or vertical. See Section 9.

Coordinate input

Type an absolute point as x,y or a relative point as @dx,dy, then press Enter or click Go. See Section 9.

Units

Sets the working unit for the whole drawing (mm, cm, m, km, in, ft, yd, mi).

Zoom − / Zoom label / Zoom + / Fit / 1:1

Zoom out, view the current zoom percentage, zoom in, fit the whole drawing to the window, or reset to a 1:1 view.

Export

Exports the drawing as PNG, SVG, PDF, DXF or JSON. See Section 16.

Print

Opens the Print/Plot dialog — paper size, scale, orientation and title block (Ctrl+P).

Shortcuts

Opens the full keyboard-shortcut reference shown in Section 18 (also opens with the ? key).

Help — Help / About

Help opens the same shortcut and toolbar reference; About shows the developer's contact details.

Theme

Switches between the dark and light workspace themes.

6. Left Tool Rail — Draw & Edit Tools

Every drawing and editing tool has a dedicated icon button in the left tool rail. Basic tools have a single-letter or Shift+letter keyboard shortcut; the advanced edit tools added below are reached from the tool rail or the tool finder (press /) and have no dedicated key.

6.4 Advanced edit tools

NEW — This entire row of tools — a second bank of editing commands below the basic Move/Copy/Rotate/Scale/Mirror/Offset/Trim/Extend/Delete row — is present in the tool rail but was not documented in the original manual. None of these have a single-key shortcut; open them from the tool rail icon or by typing the command name into the tool finder (/).

6.5 Blocks & libraries

       Insert block / symbol — place a previously saved block, or a symbol from the engineering library, onto the drawing.

       Engineering Libraries — browse the built-in library of engineering symbols.

       Make block — turns the current selection into a single reusable block.

7. Advanced Selection

NEW — The Select menu in the top ribbon (an entire menu, alongside Engineering, Templates, Analysis and AI) was missing from the original manual.

Beyond clicking or drag-selecting objects directly on the canvas, the Select menu offers ways to build a selection by criteria:

Selects every object on the drawing of the same type as the currently selected object.

Select by Layer

Selects every object that shares a layer with the currently selected object.

Select by Color

Selects every object that shares a stroke colour with the currently selected object.

Select Inside Polygon

Selects every object that falls inside a polygon you click out on the canvas.

Quick Select…

Opens a dialog to build a selection from scratch by object type, layer, and/or stroke colour (hex). Locked or hidden layers are skipped.

Filter Selection…

Same filter dialog as Quick Select, but narrows down the objects already selected rather than starting from the whole drawing.

8. Parametric Constraints

NEW — SmartCAD AI includes a full geometric constraints engine (in the style of AutoCAD/SolidWorks parametric sketching) that was not covered in the original manual.

Constraints are applied from the Properties panel when one or more objects are selected, and — unlike a one-time snap — stay enforced afterwards: whenever geometry changes (a grip drag, move, rotate, mirror, offset, trim, extend, scale, etc.), SmartCAD AI automatically re-solves every active constraint so the relation keeps holding. Use the Solve button in the top ribbon (Section 5) to force a full re-solve at any time.

8.1 Single-object constraints

Applied to one selected line or circle-like object at a time. These are stored as flags directly on the object.

Locks a line (or arrow/x-line/ray) so it stays exactly horizontal.

Vertical

Locks a line (or arrow/x-line/ray) so it stays exactly vertical.

Fixed Length

Locks a line's length so edits elsewhere on the drawing can't change it.

Fixed Angle

Locks a line's angle so edits elsewhere on the drawing can't change it.

Fixed Radius

Locks a circle's or arc's radius.

8.2 Relational constraints

Applied between two selected objects — the first object acts as the fixed reference, the second is solved to satisfy the relation.

Tangent

Keeps a line and a circle/arc touching at one point.

Concentric

Keeps two circles/arcs sharing the same centre.

Coincident

Keeps a point on the second object snapped to a point on the first.

Equal Length

Keeps two lines the same length.

Equal Radius

Keeps two circles/arcs the same radius.

Available relational constraint buttons vary with what's selected — for example Tangent only appears when one line and one circle-like object are selected, and Concentric/Equal Radius only appear between two circle-like objects.

9. Drafting Aids & Precise Input

9.1 Snap and grid

       Snap — toggle in the top ribbon; when on, new points lock to the grid spacing you set.

       Grid size — sets the spacing of the background grid, in the current drawing unit.

       Grid toggle — shows or hides the grid (F7).

9.2 Object Snap, Polar Tracking and Ortho

       OSnap (Object Snap) — when enabled, the cursor snaps to endpoints, midpoints and centres of existing objects, so new geometry connects exactly (F3).

       Polar Tracking — snaps the drawing angle, measured from the last point, to a fixed increment that you set (default 15°) (F10).

       Ortho — restricts the next point to be exactly horizontal or vertical from the last point (F8).

9.3 Typed coordinate entry

For exact placement, type coordinates into the coordinate box in the top ribbon (or the on-canvas dynamic input) and press Enter or click Go:

       x,y — an absolute point, measured from the drawing origin.

       @dx,dy — a relative point, measured from the last point placed.

This works while any drawing tool is active, and can be combined with Snap, OSnap, Polar and Ortho.

10. Right Panel — Properties & Layers

10.1 Properties tab

Shows the editable style and geometry of whatever is currently selected on the canvas — for example colour, line weight, layer assignment, precise coordinates or dimensions, and (where applicable) the parametric constraint controls described in Section 8. Change a value here to update the selected object immediately.

10.2 Layers tab

Lists every layer in the drawing. For each layer you can:

       Toggle visibility (show/hide the layer).

       Toggle lock (prevent the layer's objects from being selected or edited).

       Change the layer colour.

       Delete the layer.

The active layer name is also shown at all times in the status bar (Section 11).

11. Status Bar

The status bar along the bottom of the window gives live feedback while you work:

12. Engineering Drawing Generators

The Engineering menu in the top ribbon groups ready-made drawing generators for common civil engineering deliverables, organised into four categories.

NEW — The Templates menu — a full ready-made-drawing library alongside Engineering, Analysis and Select — was missing from the original manual.

Unlike the Engineering generators (Section 12), which build a drawing from data you supply, Smart Templates drop a ready-made starting drawing straight onto the canvas for you to adapt. They're organised into five categories:

14. Advanced Engineering Analysis

The Analysis menu provides calculation tools for structural and geotechnical checks, in addition to drafting.

Solves a 2D truss using the finite element method — member forces and support reactions from a defined geometry and loading.

Structural Analysis (Continuous Beam)

Analyses a continuous beam across multiple supports — bending moments, shear forces and reactions.

Geotechnical Analysis (Bearing & Settlement)

Calculates bearing capacity and expected settlement for a given foundation and soil condition.

15. AI Features (Beta)

The AI menu, marked BETA, adds AI-assisted drafting and checking tools, grouped as follows.

15.1 Generate

       Draw from Text Prompt — describe the geometry you want in plain language and let the AI generate it on the canvas.

       NEW Sketch to CAD (Image) — upload a photo or scanned sketch and let the AI convert it into editable CAD geometry.

15.2 Annotate

       Smart Dimensioning — automatically places dimension lines on selected geometry.

       Auto Annotations — automatically adds labels and notes to the drawing.

15.3 Review

       Error Detection — scans the drawing for likely drafting errors.

       Drawing Validation — checks the drawing against expected engineering conventions.

15.4 Engineering

       Engineering Calculations — runs supporting engineering calculations related to the current drawing.

       Material Estimation — estimates material take-off quantities from the drawing.

Note: AI features are marked Beta and their output should always be checked by a qualified engineer before use in design or construction.

16. Import, Export & Printing

16.1 Import

Place a raster image (e.g. a scanned sketch or site photo) as a reference on the canvas.

PDF Underlay

16.2 Export

16.3 Print / Plot

Ctrl+P (or the Print button) opens the Print/Plot dialog, where you can set the paper size, plot scale, page orientation and title block before printing or generating a hard-copy layout.

17. Mouse Controls

       Click — select an object, or place the next point of the tool in use.

       Shift + click — add another object to the current selection.

       Drag on empty space — draw a marquee (rubber-band) box to select multiple objects at once.

       Drag a selected object — move it directly.

       Drag a grip (small square) on a selected object — reshape it directly, with a live length/angle readout.

       Right-click — open a quick context menu (Move, Copy, Rotate, Scale, Mirror, Properties, Delete, and more).

       Double-click — finishes an in-progress Polyline, Spline or Leader.

       Scroll wheel — zoom in or out, centred on the cursor position.

       Space + drag — pan the view without switching tools.

18. Keyboard Shortcuts — Full Reference

This section lists every keyboard shortcut in SmartCAD AI. The same list is available inside the application at any time by pressing ? or via the Shortcuts button in the top ribbon.

NEW — The advanced edit tools (Stretch, Fillet, Chamfer, Join, Break, Divide, Explode, Measure, Align, Match Properties, Path Array) and Array have no dedicated keyboard shortcut — open them from the tool rail or the tool finder (/).

19. Tips for Efficient Drafting

       Use the tool finder (press /) to jump straight to any tool or command by typing its name — faster than hunting through menus once you know roughly what you want. It also covers the advanced edit tools that have no single-key shortcut.

       Keep Snap and OSnap on for most day-to-day drafting; switch on Ortho or Polar Tracking only when you specifically need locked angles.

       For exact geometry (setback distances, footing spacing, chainages), type coordinates directly into the coordinate box rather than clicking freehand.

       Organise a drawing into layers early — for example separate layers for grid lines, structural elements, dimensions and text — so visibility and locking can be controlled independently.

       Once a piece of geometry is correct, apply a parametric constraint (Section 8) so later edits elsewhere in the drawing can't accidentally distort it.

       Start from a Smart Template (Section 13) for common deliverables — it's usually faster to adapt a ready-made drawing than to start from a blank canvas.

       Save the project (Ctrl+S) regularly while working; use Export only for the final, shareable output.

       Treat AI-generated geometry, dimensions and calculations as a fast first draft, and verify them against your own engineering judgement before relying on them.
