1. About SmartCAD AI
SmartCAD AI is a browser-based
2D drafting board built specifically for civil engineering work. It combines a
full CAD drawing toolset with ready-made engineering drawing generators,
structural and geotechnical analysis modules, and a set of AI-assisted drafting
features — all running inside a single web page, with no installation required.
The application is reached
directly through a web browser at the address below. No software installation,
plug-in, or account sign-up is needed to start drafting.

1.1 What SmartCAD AI offers

General drafting: lines, polylines, rectangles,
circles, arcs, ellipses, polygons, splines, Bezier curves, text, arrows,
points, dimensions, leaders, tables, construction lines and rays.

Editing tools: move, copy, rotate, scale, mirror,
offset, trim, extend, and delete, plus direct on-canvas grip-editing.

This manual is written for
anyone using SmartCAD AI to produce drawings — civil engineering students, site
engineers, surveyors, and drafters. It covers the interface layout, every
toolbar and menu, the complete keyboard shortcut list, and step-by-step guidance
for common tasks.

3. Interface Overview
The SmartCAD AI workspace is
divided into five main zones. Every zone is always visible — nothing needs to
be opened separately.

4. Getting Started
4.1 Opening the application
Open a web browser and go to
cad.ervivekshah.com.np. The drafting board loads directly — there is nothing to
install.
4.2 Starting, opening and saving a project
●
New — starts a blank drawing. Found in the top ribbon,
or press Ctrl+N.
●
Open — loads a previously saved project file (.json).
Top ribbon, or Ctrl+O.
●
Save — saves the current drawing to a project file
(.json) that can be re-opened later. Top ribbon, or Ctrl+S.
Project files only work inside
SmartCAD AI. For drawings to share or plot, use Export or Print instead
(Section 16).
4.3 Setting your drawing units
Choose the working unit from the
Units drop-down in the top ribbon: millimetres, centimetres, metres,
kilometres, inches, feet, yards or miles. All coordinate entry, dimensions and
readouts follow this setting.
4.4 A basic drawing workflow
1. Pick a drawing tool from the
left tool rail (or press its shortcut key).
2. Click points on the canvas to
place the object, or type exact coordinates into the coordinate box (Section 9)
and press Enter.
3. Use Snap, OSnap, Polar and
Ortho to draw accurately (Section 9).
4. Select finished objects with
the Select tool to move, copy, rotate, scale, mirror, offset, trim, extend, or
use an advanced edit tool (Section 6.4) such as fillet, chamfer, stretch or
array.
5. Apply parametric constraints
(Section 8) where geometry should stay locked to a relation as the drawing
changes.
6. Check and adjust object style
and geometry in the Properties panel; organise the drawing using Layers.
7. Save the project regularly
(Ctrl+S), and Export or Print when the drawing is ready to share (Section 16).
5. Top Ribbon Reference
The top ribbon is the main
command bar. Its contents, left to right, are described below.

6. Left Tool Rail — Draw & Edit Tools
Every drawing and editing tool
has a dedicated icon button in the left tool rail. Basic tools have a
single-letter or Shift+letter keyboard shortcut; the advanced edit tools added
below are reached from the tool rail or the tool finder (press /) and have no
dedicated key.

6.4 Advanced edit tools
NEW — This
entire row of tools — a second bank of editing commands below the basic
Move/Copy/Rotate/Scale/Mirror/Offset/Trim/Extend/Delete row — is present in the
tool rail but was not documented in the original manual. None of these have a
single-key shortcut; open them from the tool rail icon or by typing the command
name into the tool finder (/).

6.5 Blocks & libraries

7. Advanced Selection
NEW — The
Select menu in the top ribbon (an entire menu, alongside Engineering,
Templates, Analysis and AI) was missing from the original manual.
Beyond clicking or
drag-selecting objects directly on the canvas, the Select menu offers ways to
build a selection by criteria:

8. Parametric Constraints
NEW — SmartCAD
AI includes a full geometric constraints engine (in the style of
AutoCAD/SolidWorks parametric sketching) that was not covered in the original
manual.
Constraints are applied from the
Properties panel when one or more objects are selected, and — unlike a one-time
snap — stay enforced afterwards: whenever geometry changes (a grip drag, move,
rotate, mirror, offset, trim, extend, scale, etc.), SmartCAD AI automatically
re-solves every active constraint so the relation keeps holding. Use the Solve
button in the top ribbon (Section 5) to force a full re-solve at any time.
8.1 Single-object constraints
Applied to one selected line or
circle-like object at a time. These are stored as flags directly on the object.

8.2 Relational constraints
Applied between two selected
objects — the first object acts as the fixed reference, the second is solved to
satisfy the relation.

Available relational constraint
buttons vary with what's selected — for example Tangent only appears when one
line and one circle-like object are selected, and Concentric/Equal Radius only
appear between two circle-like objects.
9. Drafting Aids & Precise Input
9.1 Snap and grid
●
Snap — toggle in the top ribbon; when on, new points
lock to the grid spacing you set.
●
Grid size — sets the spacing of the background grid, in
the current drawing unit.
●
Grid toggle — shows or hides the grid (F7).
9.2 Object Snap, Polar Tracking and Ortho
●
OSnap (Object Snap) — when enabled, the cursor snaps to
endpoints, midpoints and centres of existing objects, so new geometry connects
exactly (F3).
●
Polar Tracking — snaps the drawing angle, measured from
the last point, to a fixed increment that you set (default 15°) (F10).
●
Ortho — restricts the next point to be exactly
horizontal or vertical from the last point (F8).
9.3 Typed coordinate entry
For exact placement, type
coordinates into the coordinate box in the top ribbon (or the on-canvas dynamic
input) and press Enter or click Go:
●
x,y — an absolute point, measured from the drawing
origin.
●
@dx,dy — a relative point, measured from the last point
placed.
This works while any drawing
tool is active, and can be combined with Snap, OSnap, Polar and Ortho.
10. Right Panel — Properties & Layers
10.1 Properties tab
Shows the editable style and
geometry of whatever is currently selected on the canvas — for example colour,
line weight, layer assignment, precise coordinates or dimensions, and (where
applicable) the parametric constraint controls described in Section 8. Change a
value here to update the selected object immediately.
10.2 Layers tab
Lists every layer in the
drawing. For each layer you can:

Toggle visibility (show/hide the layer).
●
Toggle lock (prevent the layer's objects from being
selected or edited).
●
Change the layer colour.
●
Delete the layer.
The active layer name is also
shown at all times in the status bar (Section 11).
11. Status Bar
The status bar along the bottom
of the window gives live feedback while you work:

16.3 Print / Plot
Ctrl+P (or the Print button)
opens the Print/Plot dialog, where you can set the paper size, plot scale, page
orientation and title block before printing or generating a hard-copy layout.
17. Mouse Controls

Click — select an object, or place the next point of
the tool in use.

Shift + click — add another object to the current
selection.
●
Drag on empty space — draw a marquee (rubber-band) box
to select multiple objects at once.

Drag a selected object — move it directly.
●
Drag a grip (small square) on a selected object —
reshape it directly, with a live length/angle readout.
●
Right-click — open a quick context menu (Move, Copy,
Rotate, Scale, Mirror, Properties, Delete, and more).

keyboard shortcut in SmartCAD AI. The same list is available inside the
application at any time by pressing ? or via the Shortcuts button in the top
ribbon.
NEW — The
advanced edit tools (Stretch, Fillet, Chamfer, Join, Break, Divide, Explode,
Measure, Align, Match Properties, Path Array) and Array have no dedicated
keyboard shortcut — open them from the tool rail or the tool finder (/).

19. Tips for Efficient Drafting
●
Use the tool finder (press /) to jump straight to any
tool or command by typing its name — faster than hunting through menus once you
know roughly what you want. It also covers the advanced edit tools that have no
single-key shortcut.
●
Keep Snap and OSnap on for most day-to-day drafting;
switch on Ortho or Polar Tracking only when you specifically need locked
angles.
●
For exact geometry (setback distances, footing spacing,
chainages), type coordinates directly into the coordinate box rather than
clicking freehand.
●
Organise a drawing into layers early — for example
separate layers for grid lines, structural elements, dimensions and text — so
visibility and locking can be controlled independently.
●
Once a piece of geometry is correct, apply a parametric
constraint (Section 8) so later edits elsewhere in the drawing can't
accidentally distort it.
●
Start from a Smart Template (Section 13) for common
deliverables — it's usually faster to adapt a ready-made drawing than to start
from a blank canvas.
●
Save the project (Ctrl+S) regularly while working; use
Export only for the final, shareable output.
●
Treat AI-generated geometry, dimensions and
calculations as a fast first draft, and verify them against your own
engineering judgement before relying on them.
