Atterberg Limits (for fine-grained / dual symbol)

Required for fine-grained soils (≥50% passing 0.075 mm) and dual-symbol coarse soils (5–12% fines). Determines ML/CL/MH/CH etc. and plots point on plasticity chart.
Calculation: % retained = (weight / total mass) × 100. Cumulative % = sum above sieve. % passing = 100 − cumulative %. D-values via log-linear interpolation (ASTM D422 §17).

USCS per ASTM D2487: Coarse if <50% passes 0.075 mm. Gravel if ≤50% of coarse fraction passes 4.75 mm. Well-graded gravel: Cu≥4 & 1≤Cc≤3. Well-graded sand: Cu≥6 & 1≤Cc≤3. Dual symbol if fines 5–12%. Fine-grained classified by plasticity chart A-line: IP = 0.73(wL − 20).
