Definition of Soil

Soil is an unconsolidated natural material formed from the weathering of rocks - a loose mix, not a solid mass.

Every soil is really four ingredients sharing the same space. Squeeze a handful and you're holding all four at once.

Origin of Soil

Soil formation is a one-way conveyor belt - rock is broken down, sometimes carried elsewhere, and finally settles as soil. Watch the marker travel the path:

Parent Rock

The original rock from which soil is formed is called the parent rock (or parent material). Its mineral makeup decides what kind of soil comes out the other end.

Weathering

Weathering is the breakdown of rock into smaller particles at or near the earth's surface. It happens in three distinct ways - each leaving a different fingerprint on the resulting soil.

Residual vs. Transported Soil

After weathering, soil takes one of two paths: it can stay put, or it can be carried away before settling.

Residual Soil

Remains exactly where it was formed from the parent rock - sitting directly above it.

Transported Soil

Weathered first, then moved by an agent, and deposited somewhere new.
